My suspicion is that a 24-hour contest would probably find much more
support in Europe than here, given how many European-sponsored shorter
contests there are, and the inconvenience posed by 0000 Saturday to 2359
Sunday for people further East.
What I don't understand is why a *full* set of 24-hour overlays isn't a
good idea. A decade ago, several of us ran a survey, and a plurality of
those responding said that it would cause them to operate as much or
more. I thought we had what we hoped for when the 24-hour Classic
category was announced. Alas, by banning SO2R and spotting assistance,
the Committee closed the door on those of us wholack the physical
wherewithal for 48 hours, (I'm 74, with 60 years of contesting), but
still want to compete and use the technology others in the contest have
available.

That's a silly analysis. The 24 hour category was established so that
participants didn't have to keep their butt in the chair for 45 hours,
and so they'd have time for sleep and family. It ALSO was intended
(at least by some of us who lobbied for it) to put some additional
strategy into the event by requiring participants to intelligently
select operating times (based upon propagation and bands) to maximize
their score.
It was never intended to turn the event into a one day contest.

For the 2014 CQWW Classic CW, NA top 10 scores, here is the amount of

N4AF 40:57
N8II 42:12
WC1M 40:48
KU2M 46:59
K9MA 47:02
WU2X 40:30
K2NV 47:58
W1AW/3 47:57
K9DU/0 42:37
If you only could get 24 hours free, instead of the whole weekend
free to pick your op times, good luck! A real 24 hour category does
not require investing the whole weekend in the contest.
