Numbers are approximate but should be reasonably close. I had
only intended on messin' around a bit, make a couple hundreds Qs,
work a little DX, and then go home, so I didn't even bother to take
the computer with me. Then I got caught up in the fun and....., well,
you know how it goes!
While the numbers are approximate, the amount of fun is not!!
Best results to EU I've ever had!! Worked 53 EUs on Friday night.
Only *heard* three on Saturday night but worked 3 JAs on Sunday
morning - none heard on Saturday morning.
Missed Sections: MAR, VY1/VE8, KP2
DX heard but not worked: FG, 6Y5, EA, SP
DX conspicuously absent: VK, ZL (or anything else in the Pacific)

W7OM and I spent an evening driving around the neighborhood looking for our
s9 QRN and found streetlights
that were cycling on and off every 60 or so seconds, and in the intital turn
on phase were producing VERY loud
static. We found 6 bad lights in a 12 block area....
Called CITY LIGHT and they told us that these new lamps were burning out in
a 2 year period and many go thru
that on-off cycling. The older mercury vapors were good for 20 years
each..and this new lot was bought by bid, They replaced 2 near W7OMs home
(within a block) and he now is able to actually hear 80 and 160.
Can you imagine a city of 500,000 people with the street lights going out
every 2 years? and we found 6 bad in
one square mile.
The QUESTION: Has anyone gone through the process of dealing with a power
utility in getting them to change their type of lights? or change out the
bad ones? or had experience in talking to the "powers that be" on this subject?
Is there some sort of "danger" or "harm", (other than big QRN on HF) to
equipment TV, stereo, people, etc
being caused by this?
I want to write a letter to our power utility and to the city council
explaining the problem, and would like to have
some ammunition from knowledgable folks such as yourselves

Like a lightbulb, the old brain suddenly clicked on. The black hole is not
real, it is just a state of mind. The problem is that when we, the whiners
and complainers, find a hole, we CQ "IN" it, and if we would just CQ "ON"
it we wouldn't be down at the bottom of the pile. From now on I am going to
take a more enlightened stance. Instead of being "propagationally
challenged" I will think positive thoughts. We are wonderfully "absorption
endowed".

Has anyone else experienced a problem with ALC in the AL-1500 or other
AL-xxx series? If I monitor ALC on the multimeter, the ALC
characteristics completely change and the grid drive increases considerably.
Also, I've blown the 1N4007 (300-0266) diode on the Filter Capacitor
Board twice. I replaced it with a 1N5404 (3A diode) and have had no
further problem. All in all, I'm very happy with my new AL-1500 - it's
one fine CONTEST amplifier.
