See part 97.105 in the FCC rules:

 (a) The control operator must ensure the immediate proper operation of the
station, regardless of the type of control.

(b) A station may only be operated in the manner and to the extent
permitted by the privileges authorized for the class of operator license
held by the control operator.

If you are the control operator, then you can only operate within the
frequencies allowed to your license class despite what the station licensee
is allowed to do (i.e. even if KV4FZ holds an Extra class license, you
cannot operate in the Extra-only parts of the band as a control operator).
If KV4FZ is the control operator, you can operate in the Extra subbands.

But as has been noted, that puts you into the multi-op category. You cannot
operate as a single-op under any conditions in the Extra subbands if you
don't hold an Extra class license.
