Regarding High Frequency Trading (HFT) and the great lengths traders go in
order to be the quickest, this educational and entertaining video does a
pretty good job of explaining their efforts. It's actually an audio podcast
that's been embellished with graphics.
It was only inevitable that they'd pursue HF links as it's a more direct
path - albeit with a hop or two - than transatlantic fiber optics which
meander and pass through various switches and routers.
