Pete, N4ZR, posted the results of his question re: tower base cement.
I have a related question that came to mind. I've heard that the rebar
in a tower base should not be connected to the tower because the base
may explode if the tower is hit by lightning. However, Rohn sells a 5
foot tower section that is meant to be buried in the base cement. Is
the exploding base just a ham myth?

While it's theoretically possible for the base to explode, I've dont know
anyone who's had it happen. Actually the tower base is one of the best grounds
you can have for your tower if it's big enough and designed properly.
This is called a "Ufer" ground. For more information, call Polyphaser and
ask them for their lightning protection info kit. It has a wealth of
information on different grounding configurations and covers the basic do's and
dont's of grounding your station as well as a lot of more "esoteric"
solutions for those with unlimited grounding budgets! hi hi

Yes, but IF they don't move, they have little solid basis in fact to
argue from. It may not be an immediate solution, but I think most
would see the light eventually. I may be wrong, but it is not even
an option now. It is certainly a gesture to try to satisfy everyone.
The ball is then in their court (as they say, not Federal court).

Thanks for your comments, sir. 73 de Brian

I am unsure of the actual bandwidth required by SSTV but many RTTY, CW folks
who are rather quick on the trigger to tell you that you're QRMing during
contests are running SSB 2.8 Khz filters with gradual edges that put nearly
4 Khz into the passband. Contest people typically run TIGHT filters and
squeeze in anywhere they can. On RTTY contests running a 250 hz passband,
I can pick a frequency that is clear for miles and still wipe somebody out
who is running wide SSB filters. Same thing happens with key clicks on CW
and splatter on SSB... guys in high noise areas will have their noise
blankers wide open and then attack contest stations who appear to them to be
wide or dirty.

Skip zones can also be a problem in so-called clear freqs. The freq sounds
clear since a station he is not hearing is sending a 3-minute transmission of
some picture. The receiving station is off freq (maybe LSB) tuned to the
tones for the picture and doesn't copy the QRL request (a process taking
approximatly 4 seconds). Couple minutes later, when the SSTV transmission
is over, you get the "junk-yard-dog" attack.

It's kind of like the guy who hates kids and fireworks but he stillwho
goes to the park on the 4th of July. If you don't wanna contest on contest
weekends, you gotta get a life and find something else to do.to do.

(Yeah, I know... there is some sort of contest every weekend but the the
wall-to-wall stuff is only three or four weekends a year.)

Yes, furthermore, my primary radio (FT-990) is sensitive to STRONG signals
off frequency, even down/up the band. It is very frustrating in very
strong signal environments! I use a 500 Hz filter on RTTY, though I have
tried the 250 HZ filter on occasion. On either CW or RTTY stations come
back off what I think is the frequency. I would even miss Q's if i used
the narrowest filters all the time. I have heard ststions comment about
splatter and I really wonder how many of those complaints are really
receiver characteristics. My guess is quite a few, but it is not rather
politically correct to tell someone his receiver is to blame HI.

Yes, thank you for stating it so well, sir. I think this can easily happen.
Responding to the QRL, wipes out the picture, even if the QRL is heard.
Picture sending is slow and interruptions are most unwelcome, even if they
are QRLs. I can just imagine how many QRLs take place on a busy weekend.
Anyhow, I agree this is one way misunderstandings get started.
