Depends on the exact exchange, which is very truncated in the example below.

If it's unconditional?  No, probably not.

If it's conditional?  Probably.  (Although "obligated" might be too strong a
word).

If NA2DEF gives a firm time frame, say 5 minutes, and returns on time (or
early), then I would expect AA4GHI to do the "right" thing and give the
frequency back... after 5 minutes (or whatever).  If 'DEF is very late,
well, things get complicated.

In general, if someone offers me a frequency for a short period of time, my
personal policy is to return it when that someone returns.  But that's my
decision, there's no hard and fast rule on this.

What do you think is right?
