Somehow I seem to recall this conversation before - many times!

The 40M band just isn't big enough, and a major contest in any mode 
spills over "normal" boundaries, and gets the folks on the other 
modes mad. CW contesters are just the same. In a major contest they 
go up to 7065+, and screw up much of the SSB DX band. Worst of all is 
RTTY, because they seem to have more contests, and can't agree where 
their band is. Some think it's just below 7040, and others 7070 up!

So relax. Do like I do - when there's a non-SSB contest, I enjoy my knitting.

BTW, I wonder where you were listening on 40M in CQWW/SSB: "Several 
20-25 KHz segments where no one was operating"? I was hearing about 3 
stations each KHz.
