If the desktop publishing was done on a Mac, then the images certainly could
be platform-specific formats (like PICT) or platform-specific versions (like
Mac TIFF--different byte order than Win TIFF) or an old EPS file. File
formats come both ways, though most modern formats (like JPEG & PNG) are
agnostic about such differences.
If someone needs help converting image file formats for the manual, drop me
a note. I have software that can covert many different formats, including
cross-platform.
