Joe,

I think you are experiencing high voltage switching transients from the high
power loads in the building raising the potential of your earth (ground)
connection. This a common problem affecting electronic equipment in
industrial process plant environments with heavy machinery and buildings
with lots of HVAC equipment starting up and shutting down. In the electronic
security industry we often get equipment blown up because of bad earth
(ground) connections. Never trust the grounding of electrical conduits,
there are numerous reasons why these can be badly earthed at the point where
you make your connnection. Try grounding to a copper cold water pipe as
close as possible to the point where it enters the ground, or drive your own
copper-clad steel stake at least 2 feet into the ground and clamp your earth
wire to that. This probably means a lot of extra work running your antenna
ground but it is the only real solution.

You might also try using a switch mode power supply instead of a simple 12
volt regulator and make sure that your POE cable is separated from any
electrical cables by at least 300 mm (12 inches) along its entire length.

Is it just the radio card that is dieing or the whole KN-105. Also, are
you using shielded or standard Cat-5 cable and what length?

Hi:

I begin to see this problems in the last weeks with my AP1000 Base and I saw
this problem in the list in May.

I know that I have a lot of traffic and clients in the Base, but I want to
know if there was some solution, binary upgrade or really suggestion for
this problem..

Thanks all.

We have had problems similar to this where the radio performance (ie
signal) would degrade to very low levels, even under 30mW. We seem to
have solved this problem by using a 24VDC supply. We suspect that the
long run of ethernet cable (maybe around 150 feet) was causing this. We
have damaged 3 200mW radios in this manner. However they would still
function, only very attenuated signal. How long is your ethernet?

Chris

It is just the radio, when I get it back to the shop and connected to a very
nearby AP, it will recieve but not transmit. We are using outdoor UTP and
running a seperate 14 Ga. solid copper ground.

I am using a 24v (BreezeComm PI-CAT5 dual) PoE injector/regulator that
delivers 24V at the antenna which is then regulated to 12V and put in the
power connector on the KN-100. The run is outdoor UTP about 25 Ft. There
is a 14 Ga. solid copper ground.

Is the performace degradation that you have seen on the TX only?

Joe

I use Lucent Orinoco Gold Classic on all links that I can, unfortunatyl this
link is too far and we have used the 200mw to "power" through the distance.

Just put the 24vdc into the board. 12v is not enough. That is your
problem.

If you are also powering a fan in that box, then make your self a
Ethernet jig to pull the power off the Ethernet before it goes into the
PI-CAT5 power regulator and pull 24 off for the board and then use the
others for your fan or what ever.
