Yup..that is correct..but you *can* transfer data from the external drive
back to the internal drive to view it. If memory serves, one couldn't
record a program directly to the external drive, you recorded the program on
the internal drive, then 'moved' it to the external drive for storage.

At least some of the DirecTV DVRs allow one to connect an eSATA external
drive, but it *replaces* the internal drive rather than adds to the
internal one's capacity. And the external drive cannot then even be
transferred to another DirecTV box, because the drive is "married to" the
original box and will be reformatted if detected by another box.
