They were not all done that way. Here on the west coast, the RX
stations are all right on the coast (aimed SW, W, and NW), while the TX
stations were either displaced up/down the coast 20 miles or so, or
inland by 20 miles or so. Some of those stations still exist. There's
one station with RX by Half Moon Bay, with TX near W6YX (overlooking
Palo Alto). Further up the coast, about 30 miles N of SF is a station
with RX and TX on the coast, 20 miles from each other. RX is near Point
Reyes, TX is to the south. Ask K3NA and W3DQ about these sites -- we
visited them together two years ago at the end of their trip to Visalia,
and K3NA exercised his 2nd class ticket!
