Amen. I spent about five years at DSC's (later Alcatel USA's) Petaluma
campus, where I had EMC oversight of projects in R&D. How I got that
position is pertinent; I was originally slotted for the Test Engineer
position, but the R&D (design) situation became open. When I agreed to
take that instead, they were understandably curious why I would want it,
as I had little [documented] design experience, but I explained that a
test engineer ends up fixing the same problems over and over - while the
R&D engineer can educate designers -- and make problems go away.
