Don,

I will be the first to admit I may have gotten lucky with my
LED tube purchase. I have not done an intensive study, but the little AM radio
parked under the tubes works fine, and I did not notice anything on HF, but my
antenna is outdoors. The ones I am using are called Werker and they sell for
$6.99 each.

I would recommend doing a couple and testing before I replaced
a whole bunch.

Hi Gary,

My following comments don't answer Hank's question, but they are related to
your topic of LED tube lights.

I replaced my magnetic ballast driven tubes that hang over my electronics
workbench in the basement with LED tubes that operate directly off of 120 Vac,
and now I pick up all kinds of trash on my oscilloscope display when making low
level signal measurements on my testbench, and I now often work in the dark (:

I also hear the RFI from these tubes when testing antennas (testing small DF
loops, etc.) inside the house in a room on our second floor above the basement
and on the opposite side of the house and I'm at least 40 feet away from the
LED tube lights, and some of the RFI is likely conducted through the house
wiring.

Can't find a manufacturer's name on my LED tube lights, but the model number is
WENT84SUA-18WB-50CF, and I still see them being sold online.

Just FYI, and YMMV.

Hank,

I have had nary a problem replacing mine with L.E.D. tubes that work
from 120 Volts. I have been using tubes from 'batteries plus bulbs'. You do
have to remove/bypass the ballast.

I have no interest in the company other than being a customer, and your
mileage may vary.

I have 4 two tube 50+ year old T12-30 36 inch fixtures that have the old
magnetic ballasts - one has a failed ballast and looking for magnetic
replacement ballasts looks like they are close to non- obtainium. There are
plenty of "electronic" replacement ballasts -

Philips Advance Ballast RELB-2S40-N
3.6 Ballast shall comply with the requirements of the Federa l Communications
Commission (FCC) rules and regulations, Title 47 CFR part 18, Consumer (Class
B) for EMI/RFI (conducted and radiated)
2.5 Ballast shall be high frequency electronic type and op erate lamps at a
frequency above 42 kHz to avoid interference w ith infrared devices and
eliminate visible flicker.

I read the paper by W1MG on Home Depot selling "industrial " ballasts vs
"residential" but nowhere does it say a "residential" ballast is in fact RF
quiet in our uses.

Anyone know if if this Phillips RELB-2S40N is quiet . Are there any brands/part
numbers of "electronic" ballasts known to be RF quiet ?
