Hi Jeff,
I bought a K3 and P3 in early August and have been using it since that time
up until a few days ago. I just cannot bring myself to like that radio. The
receiver is very noisy, no matter what method of AGC one sets it up for, and
to me, when using it in a contest, the radio is just too noisy, and that is
especially true if your pushing an amp. There are too many things that are
on their "high priority" list to fix and I personally don't think they will
get fixed anytime soon. They claim to have very fast full QSK at speeds up
to 99 wpm. They do have they, but what they don't tell you is when you
engage the QRQ QSK, you lose RIT/XIT, and several other filter utilities.
The day after the NAQP I removed my K3 from the desk and replaced it with my
IC-7700 and was absolutely shocked to hear such a quiet receiver; I actually
had to turn up the audio on the 7700 to make sure it was working. Silky
smooth full QSK up to any speed you want to run, and you don't lose any
other feature when you do so.
I'm not saying the K3 is a shabby radio, I'm just saying it is not one I am
going to keep. YMMV!

Subject: [SECC] FT1000MP vs K3
I wonder if anyone has played with a Elecraft K3 and Yaesu FT-1000MP side
by side ? I was toying with the idea of splurging and getting a K3 but a
friend of mine in Ohio ,who owns both radios, compared them side by side and
liked the MP better. He said the MP had a quieter receiver and had better
audio on SSB then a K3. He ended selling his K3. I also seem to remember
Don, W4OC, bringing a K3 on one of the Bonaire trips a few years ago and he
ended up selling his in favor of the FT1000MP.
I have never had a chance to play with a K3. Everyone seems to rave about
them. Are they really worth another $1000 over what you can buy a FT1000MP
for, which is a proven good contest radio? Any thoughts on which you liked
better?
