I suspect it is less "necessary" for frequency control of the rig than
to have the F keys available to send CW.  At our place using the N3FJP
FD program, it turned out that we needed two serial ports and had only
one on my laptop, so we had a choice: frequency control of the rig or
use of the F keys to key the rig.  We rightly chose the CW keying
