If there is a single event that gets the most people interested in
contesting, it's probably Field Day. Many top contesters, in published
profiles, attribute Field Day as being the event that got them started in
contesting. Whether or not you call it a contest, you get on the air and
make as many QSOs as you can in a prescribed period of time.
If you can't make it to the field this weekend, you might try getting some
neighborhood kids in your shack and showing them what amateur radio and
contesting(?) is all about.
