Yo to you Contesters, Dxers and lesser forms of RF-Slinging Life,
This weekend will usher in a warm-up exercise on 160M sponsored
by The Boring Amateur Radio Club. This event will start on 1500Z Oct.
20 and end on 1500Z Oct. 21. The usual set of simple rules exist at
http://www.jzap.com/k7rat/stew.html
Unlike the real Stew Perry TopBand DX Challenge there are no
plaques for the winning combatants this weekend. People will be
exercising in the contest for a variety of reasons but hardwood for the
wall won't be one of them. Reasons to get on and play in this weekend
exercise may include: testing a new TX/RX array, wire or damp
handkerchief, working DX- which will be afoot for this exercise,
practicing contesting methods, trying out The Code in a contest (very
safe area to do this), insomnia, or you'd just like a little time to
get on the air and joust with the denizens of the TopBand.
The naysayers and doomsday prognosticators have been heard
muttering about the lack of sunspots from 'ol Sol. The 160M band is the
best placed band to have the best consequences from the sun's spotless
behavior. No spots for the next cycle..?? OK- the 10-10 boys and girls
will raise their voices in frustration and angst but the enlightened
will thrive on here on 160M enjoying the evenings and in particular
competitions such as the one this weekend.
Be sure to tell your local friend/adversary that you'll be sending
in your log by Nov. 20. If they choose not to enter or send in the log
I predict you'll have a significant lead over them when the scores from
this Stew Perry TopBand Warmup come out in December before the Real Stew
Extravaganza.
Shortly I'll send out the clarion call for the Stalwarts who donate
plaques for the Official Stew Perry TopBand Challenge during the ending
days of December but this will give you time to consider what TopBand
Plaque you'd like to sponsor for that year ending event.
If you're new to the 160M neighborhood just ask around what your
grid square is, spiff up your particular wire and get on this weekend.
It'll be fun!
73 and I remain,
Lew W7EW/W7AT
