How far away is far enough away?

Is the amount of wire critical? I think the original design was 85
feet of wire. Are smaller loops effective? Is the shape of the loop
critical? I'm thinking of draping the loop across a small tree.
Also, on the ground rod -- I've read articles that placing a
counterpoise under the loop is just as effective -- thoughts?
