Lee, Bill,
If I were to put up a wire for 40M only, it would probably be a folded
dipole. No loss, possible tweak of gain, but better bandwidth. I have one
in a bucket for field days before the A3/40M days.
Lee, I need to check on the add-on kit, saying that it "worked OK" probably
just covers up the actual truth. Shortened antennae are less efficient than
full sized ones.

In the end, if you do opt for the add on to the A3, check the used sources,
eHam, etc. I found mine for about $65 at a Hamfest.

There are many days when I want to put up the beam in the driveway, but so
far I have not done that.

Oh well, I need to work on more wonder wires in the woods....

I don't know how high your A3 is, but I've heard those add-on kits
are pretty lossy...a better bet may be to put the 40m dipole at 35'
horizontal...I think that would be a good SS antenna.

80m with low supports is a problem...you could try the sloper there I
guess, it should be better than the low dipole - at least farther
out. and you may want to leave your 40m sloper if it works good as a
DX antenna...it would do better there than a low dipole.

You could also try shunt-feeding your tower on 80 in lieu of the
sloper.
