OK, I will have to do an archeological dig to find
that letter - which is safe - somewhere here...
I _know_ that I didn't throw it away.
It really needs to be preserved.
I'll scan it in and post a message.

William Shanks calculated pi to 707 places
by hand in 1873-74, but made an error
from the 527th place forward.
D. F. Ferguson found the error in 1945
(using a mechanical calculator?).
The "Hall of Fame of Discovery"
in Paris had decorated the inside
of their cupola with Shanks's 707 digits.
Then, after WWII they had to redo 180.
The workmen were shaking their heads
over the crazy scientists.
