Cops on bikes: September 1975 - On my first DX-pedition to Andora (C31IL), I
was about 10 minutes into the Spanish Pyrenees mountains riding fast (I
thought) on a Honda 750 when two cops on motorbikes (BMWs) came up behind me
out of nowhere. Pulled me over of course but as it turned out then only wanted
to look at my bike and then show me they could ride faster. When we left
together, they vanished in nothing flat!
On THAT DX-pedition we ran a Swan SS-100 (50w) off of a car battery. The other
op brought the VW bus and the Swan. I built the antennas on site (wire beams,
of course). I was amazed how long we could work off of the car battery with
this new transistorized radio. Up till then I had only used tube rigs.
I returned to Berlin and 2 months later, bought my Argonaut 505. I wanted to
try out these new transistorized radios. THEN THE REAL FUN BEGAN.

Nice set-up Rick and not just any bike but a great BMW. My dream bike when I
was a young-un in Holland. The highway patrol cops had them, together with
pure White "Porsches" roaming the Dutch "Autobahn" at brake neck speeds. Two
cops in the car with White leather coats, fur collars, White Helmets and the
roof folded back. No getting away from them hi.... hi.

Nice. What year was that photo taken?
I bought the 505, then modified the SSB Gen board, replacing the 4 crystals
filter with an XF9-B 8 pole SSB filter, which at that time was the best SSB
filter you could buy (for 9 MHz).
Then I bought a new 509, but migrated the SSB Gen board from the 505 to the
509 because of the filter.
Then I built an audio filter and mounted it inside the radio.
Finally I added a 6-pole 500 Hz Xtal filter (from Yaesu).
Kept it for 20 years and was all over Europe with it, on mountain tops and
sandy or rocky beaches.
One of my favorite portable locations was the Isle of Man.

The 509 was a fun radio. I bought one new when my friends were buying the
TS-520 and 101E.
