If you got the power supply with the built in VOX circuitry, save yourself
trouble and worry by not trying to use that circuitry.
After considerable pain in testing and comparing microphones with my 544, I
chose the Astatic D-104 with a crystal element. I don't remember if it did
not have an amplifier in the base or if I bypassed the amplifier but the
microphone went right to the rig. I tried the Shure 444 but got reports
from friends that it sounded a little "muffled." The friends who knew what
I sounded like in person all opined that the D-104 was the most natural to
their ears.
After finding the "perfect" microphone, I unplugged it and used a key /
keyer from then on.

Just picked up a 544 that I want to use as my primary rig. Know it's old,
but it's still a fun rig and will work okay here for cw and ssb both. Have
never run more than five watts and mostly one watt or less for 28 years now
so will run it reduced too.
Not sure what mods it might have listed somewhere, but want to peak it up
and would appreciate some leads on what might need modifying.
Planning on either the old D-104 or the Heil desk mike for ssb. If anyone
knows of another mike that seems to work better, please let me know.
Considering the speech processor that Ten Tec still sells to ehlp on ssb
(though not going to be there much).
