OK Dave, it's about the same here too. Volvo's are respected
cars and known for reliability and safety, but they are also
viewed to be conservative and many people don't want to be seen
in one (e.g., Yuppies). It's something a professor or a doctor
(those who have already made it, not those who are still trying)
would drive, also to make a statement.

Pete, it seems like your definition is a U.S.-only definition.
Germany is a bit different. Yuppies drive mostly BMW's and
occasionally Mercedes. The really well off Yuppies drive
Porsches. Audi has an image that is closer to that of the Volvo.
Yuppies wouldn't drive them.

Thanks for the clarity on the point, guys.

My take on this is that they might not look like much
(Jupiter/Volvo/boxy),
but
they are safe, reliable, and deliver the goods.

That about right??

While some of the references I have seen have been more than
slightly
obscure, at one time "owning a Volvo" was a sign of a "Young
Upwardly mobile
Professional Person," or YUPPIE. Driving a Volvo meant you were
one of the
"in crowd."

That said, it seems at least one of the presidential wannabe's
uses the
phrase to denigrate his opponents supporters, who "aren't hip."
Another
uses the phrase as a variant of the old campaign promise "a car
in every
garage and a chicken in every pot." And there are probably
references I have
missed. Personally, a politicans version of "driving a Volvo"
reminds me
of an old song from my misspent youth.

"There will be pie, pie in the sky, by'n bye." Politicians are
really good
at hot air and promises - but the promises are best noted for
non-delivery.
