John,
You are probably getting RF into the transceiver via the RTTY cables. The
OMNI-VI is very susceptible to this. The only sure fire method that I have
found is to filter the leads at the connectors with old fashioned multi-solenoid
RF chokes. this is also true of the RS-232 control cable.

Our club station W0JH uses the Omni VI+ on RTTY and SSB without
disconnecting the RTTY input. We find that when this is done the SSB
signal has a large amount of noise on it. Is there something we overlooked
or are there any suggestions? I would appreciate any comments.
