You could use a 120 vac silgle pole double throw relay in a metal box. Wire
the coax so that it is grounding the antenna with power off and passing the
antenna to the shack woth the power on. However a direct hit by a bolt of
lightning would jump several inches just to get to your radio so that  small
gap on the relay contacts would be of no protection. Your safest plan is the
one you are using. one old timer trick is to remove the antenna PL-259
connector from the radio and place it into an empty glass coke bottle. I
cant say how effective this would be as I have never had a direct hit.
