I had a highend MFJ (if there is such a thing) and it acted the same way.
I use a 238 here and it's switchable L network is far superior to anything
else on the market. I usually just tune for a rough position then adjust
for minimum swr. I didn't realize the dial slipped. Now I've something
else to gripe about.
