Don, I don't know if you have an antenna analyzer such as the MFJ-259B.
You can use that as frequency counter, connect a coax to it, and a .01
capacitor to the inner conductor of the coax and use that as a probe.

Thanks Rick, I can probably cheat and set an external receiver w/probe at
the crystal frequency, probably the next course of action.

Don,

This is another case where a scope would be a real blessing.
You would see in a few seconds whether or not the oscillator were
functioning.
