Does anyone know if the pot that is visible through the top of the front
chassis in the front of the radio is the contrast control? You have to take
the top cover off and IIRC it's about in the center over the display.

I dont know if its EL or a tube but if its a tube it will last longer than
EL. EL is affected by age, quality and the amount of time its in operation.
10 years is the best you will get from EL before it starts lose its
luster. The Tube (cold cathode) will generally last longer but with both,
the transformers that step up the voltage to power them can give up the
ghost as well. The tubes stay brighter longer IMHO.

Subject: [TenTec] O2 Backlighting Longevity
Hi All,
Can anyone tell me what the expected life of the O2 display backlight is.
Does it make sense to use the lowest illumination level as a means of
extending the life span. Is this even an issue? I have been wondering
and this is the place to seek out an answer. I most enjoy reading the
contributions each day. Thanks & 73 Doug EI2CN
