How are you measuring output power? If you use a peak-reading meter, you
should see the same PEP output as you do with the radio in CW, but I have
noticed, as have others on the list, that the average power on SSB is less
than from other rigs. I suspect this has to do with the digital software
ALC overriding the hardware analog ALC. Hardware ALC will give a higher
average output, especially when pushed hard, although this may come at the
expense of increased IMD and poor CW pulse shape causing key-clicks. I
think that the software ALC is rigged to pull back the drive and hold it
back just when the hardware ALC starts to activate.
I would like to see TT address this in an update since the current method,
while very conservative, may be more than is needed. Letting the hardware
ALC push higher into its range would increase average SSB power without
introducing distortion or splatter, although the action in CW seems to work
just fine.
