and the problem persisted.

I really think it's the 200 uA meter itself. However it's a simple circuit and
25+ years old so tomorrow I'll follow Stuart's suggestion and dig into it a bit
further and perhaps replace a few components.

I agree with Stuart. Before doing anything else just change all of the
diodes. They are cheap and
avaiable. You won't damage any other parts such as the meter trying to trouble
shoot the circuit and it may just fix the problem! GL
