There may be several different variables at work here.
First keep in mind that only firmware versions 1.15
and later have both Noise Reduction (NR) and Noise
Blanker (NB) capability. This version of firmware was
released along with Ten Tec control panel software
version 1.65. Firmware versions older than that will
only have NR. Carl's software supported the added
noise-blanking feature shortly after it appeared in
the Ten Tec control program. Every version of either
software (and firmware) since then has had both.
Also consider that they each target a different kind
of noise problem. NR is for reducing general
background hiss and static crash types of noises. I
find it works very well, especially for signals S7 or
so and above. Whereas the NB is intended for pulse
type noises, and may not make any noticeable
difference depending on the characteristics of the
noise itself.
The PegasusPlus control program uses the exact same
features of the Pegasus command set, as does Ten Tec's
and N4PY's. There is not a lot of variation as to how
NR and NB can be implement in the control software
other than the "look and feel" of the control. Recent
versions of all three programs have both NR and NB
included. Again this is dependent on the Pegasus
firmware version, firmware versions older than 1.15
will not have any NB function at all. The most recent
firmware version is 1.19, and is the best one to use
regardless of which recent version of control software
you use.
