If the signal going to the speaker output does not
exhibit the "clipping", the it's not the digital
circuitry whose dynamic range is being exceeded.  If
it were, clipping would be seen on both the line-level
and speaker-level output.

Vice versa if clipping is seen on both audio level
outputs.

Poking around with a scope probe would be instructive.
