Yes, maybe a little.
My AM "reference" receiver is an R-390 with nice gentle L/C IF filtering,
and a Sherwood SE-3 Mk III sync detector. The Orion/II isn't anywhere near
THAT good, in overall quality of recovered audio or frequency response, but
I can't say it generally sounds bad. I've found it seems to play better if
you shift the passband a bit to one side or the other. I keep it sitting on
one of the AM BC talk-radio stations around here during the day when I'm
working in the home office, and it sounds fine.
For a long time I bugged T-T about putting a sync detector in the Orion, to
no avail, and finally gave up. Before Doug Smith moved on from T-T, he
essentially said it "ain't gonna happen", which is too bad.
