OK, you've convinced me that a Zener transient protection won't work and to build a crowbar using a zener and an SCR. Looked at the Handbook circuit with the transistor trigger for the SCR, and Ten Tec sent me the circuit used for the 280 PS crowbar. Most of the other crowbars I see on the web look like the latter, so the 280 example is probably what I will duplicate. What I was hoping to find out was what other 252/262 owners had added to their old power supplies to make them safe to use.
