When properly adjusted, the tuner at the antenna feedpoint  results in a 1:1 
swr ratio on the feedline thereby eliminating whatever line loss would have 
been suffered depending on what the swr happened to be. With the tuner at 
the rig end, the loss in the feedline is proportional to the swr on the 
line. With a swr of 1:1 loss from that source is eliminated. Of course, a 
loss still exists on the line dependent on the inherent loss of the line and 
that is, in most practical real world installations, much lower than loss 
due to high swr ratios.
