Gee,
If I remember my 540 correctly (recently sold), both sidetone pitch
and volume are adjustable from bottom mounted pots. I never found
the sound to be particularly "raspy" or unpleasant. I'd suggest
checking the adjustments to make sure that you're not overdriving
the audio amp.
