While the narrow response of the ancient headphones might help in
filtering some noise, it probably contributes ringing to the signal in a
matter that the wide band phones wouldn't. A good low pass filter might
be a better solution for the audio line. I've created a passive filter
with switchable cut off frequencies that works in 4 or 8 ohm lines that
takes out audio hiss quite nicely. I've not detected it introducing any
ringing when used in my speaker lines.
