I see it this way. Does one want a high performance

Why does this always need to be an "OR" proposition?
Why can't we have both together? Reminds me of the
crystal vs. DSP filtering debate, many see that as an
"OR" question as well, but yet the Orion now does
combine both extremely effectively, ... argument over.
In the end, I've never had a
display assist in pulling a
weak signal out of the noise .....
On the contrary I use "fancy" displays to find signals
on the 50-432MHz "weak signal" bands all the time (and
am doing so on all 4 of those bands simultaneously),
and I now find that radios without spectrum display
capabilities to be down right clunky to use. But I'll
generally agree with the sentiment about the
usefulness of displays on the radios themselves. You
simply cannot put enough information on a small 5 Inch
or so display no matter how hard you try, you really
do need a good sized external monitor or 2, or even 3.

Hi All;
Well I got the "green bananna" at a hamfest:-)
I wanted this Century 21 Digital because I know there are not many around.
The seller told me that it was not used in years & the AC plug was stepped on
& pulled off by accident, right!
Well I laid out $80 for it only to find out it needs more then I am capable
so maybe someone here can save it from the "bone Yard".
Here is the story:
1)-Panel has a few finger rub marks thru paint around a few knobs.
2)-Need ac plug.
3)-will need new on/off/volume control, I wired the switch wires together so
I cud at least turn it on.
4)-output is only a few watts on 80 & 40, nothing on others(?).
5)- Speaker needs replacing, a replacement 2+" speaker supplied(I had a new
one laying around)
Good Items>>
1)- receiver seems to work, stations heard, switches, etc. will need
cleaning.
2)- cover in vg to exc. condx. a few minor chips in vinyl covering.
3) correct tilt-up bails!
4) meter working.
5)- Digital display & tuning seem fine!
6)- Filters ok.
7)- switches & Buttons other then listed seem ok.
I suspect that someone who is familar with these should make short work of
these repairs but I am not a tech & no manual. I'd rather pass it along before I
make it worst:-)
Just trying to get my $80 bacK(+shipping)

Duane,
Ethernet would work, but the internal software would have to support an
external interface to get the data. For example, the spectrum scope on the
Jupiter screen is better than anything you can get on an external display.
The problem with displaying the data externally is that if you sweep the
frequency quickly, you get artifacts of the receiver's AGC decaying and you
see a sawtooth pattern. I asked Gary Barbour how they got around that on the
Jupiter and he said that when the Jupiter is sweeping they handle the AGC
differently. That can't be done with software commands.

As long as we're dreaming, how about a small
internal monochrome display (as
now), but with a "standard" video connector for an
external color monitor.
The hardware cost for a PC type video adapter would
be minimal. Then folks
could put as much money as they like into an
external montior.
Mark
Yep, and while a color display is nice, and can also
be extremely useful, - it just doesn't belong on the
radio itself.
And also adding an Ethernet adapter wouldn't even cost
as much as a video adapter would.

I agree. If you think administering a group with this number of
members, this much traffic and a host
of opinions is an ego trip, I'd have to say that you really haven't
tried it.
I do get a fair number of compliments, and have to deal with the
occasional "situation," but it's a
rewarding experience overall.

I don't think it is fair to say the creation of a new Orion group has to do
with someone's ego. Some folks did not want the other Orion group

and liked the separate group. I think the other Orion moderator felt mob
pressure to cancel the group. As I recall the old Orion group had over 300
members and I don't think everyone is/was for a single TT group. As
mentioned before, there has not been a single TT group for sometime.
Interesting that only the Orion group was pressured to shut down. No one
has tried (and I hope this will not happen) to shut down the other TT
groups
on Yahoo.
