You don't have to wait three minutes to get 500 watts out of the 
Hercules II. So when you hear about that DX station you need it's 500 
watts for the first three minutes, and 1500 watts thereafter, instead of 
100 watts for the first three minutes. A pileup can get a lot worse in 
those three minutes.
