I find brake and clutch cleaner gets rid of grease etc but doesn't attack
paint (at least when its fully dry)

I find that what best for me is plane old liquid handsoap, Ivory liquid,
soft soap etc. Do not remove paint just the gunk. Use a stiff but not hard
brush and it will work just fine.
