Any station I've guest operated has had the keyer set up for right handed
operation with the thumb for dits and the finger for dahs. I figured it
was a standard, but that was AFTER I learned to send left handed! More
below...

The reason I send dahs with my thumb has to do with the mind of a 23 year
old. That is how old I was when I got my first keyer. I had been
visualizing owning a keyer for a while and had always just figured that the
dashes would be sent with the thumb since the thumb is thicker and heavier
than the index finger and dashes are heavier than dots. For practice I
used to tap out CW on my leg using the thumb (of by right hand) for the
dashes and the finger for dots. Well, the day came when I got a keyer and
discovered I had it backwards. The easiest thing to do was to move it to
my left hand, which worked well 'cause I had been telling myself I really
should do CW left handed anyway!
