I made inquiry of Astron some eleven years ago because my RS-35 did not seem
to be designed to work in an RF environment. The regulator circuitry varied
the supply's output voltage with RF in my shack. The exchange is below. I
did as Astron suggested and it cured the trouble. A local repeater owner
told me that the Astrons were succeptible to voltage spikes from lightning
in the county since the spike can travel unimpeded into the regulator
circuitry through the negative lead. Performing the modification recommended
by Astron greatly reduced their failure rate to zero.
(I sure hope this isn't in the ARRL Handbook)

There have been troubles reported in the past with the Astron RS-35 due to
RF energy entering the unit. I do not know if newer models have eliminated
that but here's what they said ten years ago.

MIKE.
1ST CHECK YOUR AC OUTLET GROUND IT MUST HAVE GOOD CONNECTION
2ND. MEASURE FROM THE -13.8V TERMINAL TO CHASSIS, IF NO DIRECT CONNECTION,
RUN A PIECE OF WIRE FROM -13.8V TERMINAL TO CHASSIS.

Subject: RS-35 in an RF environment
Several people have advised me that Astron had a service bulletin for the
Astron RS-35 (and possibly other models) which advised to strap the
negative
post of the supply to the cabinet to reduce or eliminate problems caused
when RF energy affects the supply's regulation. This is in particular a
frequent problem in the amateur radio service.
Could you confirm such bulletin and either email it to me or point me to
the
URL that will allow me to view it, please?
Many thanks,
Mike Hyder
