Thanks Jim and others for your suggestions.
I did get the issue resolved by removing HRD and all of the related files,
rebooting the computer and then downloading a fresh install of the latest
version. All is well. For some reason and I was never able to find exactly
why, but I believe there must have been either missing files or corrupt
files residing on the computer. I suspect a flawed update and/or install
was the culprit that caused the issue.
In general HRD in the past has been quite solid with regard to the Omni VII
and the Eagle. From other applications on the computer, I knew that the
hardware and cables were good so the only suspect was the software. I even
stepped back a couple of versions Omni VII firmware just to make sure
something in the current code wasn't flawed.
Meteor scatter in the past couple of days and nights have produced several
nice contacts. Even the keying issue with the 712 USB soundcard interface
was resolved by me, via a hardware mod, and the pings on 2M via WSJT has
been fun.
Sure glad I have two fine radios on the desk with very issues if any to
raise any concerns.

The current HRD release is 5.24.0.36 released last week.
Not that helpful but, I have had no problems with my Omni-VII with the
current firmware and a USB-Serial cable based on the FTDI chipset.

In using HRD version 5.24., durrent release, for what ever reason I have
not been able to get it to connect to the radio, Radio Mode, via RS-232
connection. No serial converter being used. Configuration: Com port 1,
57600 8 N 1 seems to be correct. Other software using the same computer,
same cable and same radio does work and it reads frequency and mode as
expected. When HRD loads it gives the error message that it can not read
frequency. I've tried the Auto-Detect mode for both com ports and baud
rates without success. I've tried various combinations of DTR, RTS and CTS
without any success.
I seem to recall that an earlier version of HRD works but I no longer have
access to the version. That earlier version did not have provisions for the
Eagle which the current version supports and that work nicely I might add.
I've also stepped back to earlier firmware versions of Omni VII firmware
without success. Currently using 1.035a for the Omni VII.
Any thoughts or suggestions will be appreciated.
