Two verticals at very short spacings can't develop any other than a cardioid
pattern, the F/B is (may be) a sharp notch and the F/S is a mith.
If your EWE can be long enough to have the verticals at a more reasonable
spacing (best would be around 1/4WL) You can obtain a more real directional
pattern.
In the case you have enough room, 4 short verticals in a diamond
configuration (a la W8JI) will outperform the above systems, see Tom's web
site.
