Hi John,
Tee top is about 70 percent each side of an inverted L. So if you put 60
foot vertical and were looking at 70 foot horizontal for resonance, try 50
foot on each side. That should get you close. You may want to start longer
and trim, depending on your soil and ground conditions. You do need a good
ground over either Tee or Inverted L antenna. Do not cheat and use only a
few radials.
What I think ON4UN was saying is that you cancel the horizontal radiation
components with a Tee. If you have a 3/8 wave inverted L you will have lots
of sky wave from the long horizontal component. Kind of like a 1/4 wave
sloper off a tower. If you don't want to work locals, use a Tee. If you
want some US contacts, consider an inverted L.
Anything over 45 feet up and the rest out will work, assuming it is 1/4 or
5/16 wave overall and you have low-loss components to match the antenna to
50 ohm coax. The majority of the energy will be in the vertical radiation.
