The recent poor condx on 160 are due to increased solar
activity with the occurrence of a M-class flare (M1.9)
It peaked at about 1347Z, April 1. It apparently originated from Region 8026
which only recently came on the solar disc.
NOAA-SEC confirms that this is the first Major Flare of the new cycle.
Also because this region is still off on the east limb about 20 degrees from
center disc, it may not have as great an effect on earth's geomagnetic activity
as it might have. While Topband
conditions are marginal, our VHF colleagues enjoyed a 6 meter
opening from the southern US to South America last evening
with a rumored 2 Meter TEP QSO occurring between Texas
and Bolivia. - Jon N0JK
