One of the MFJ-1026/1025 Noise Cancelling units described by N4XX in a
previous post would help also for those planning expeditions in the future.
Ted reported excellent rejection of thunderstorm QRN using a low dipole
as the noise antenna input to his MFJ-1026.
I feel the major problem 3B7RF is experiencing is their timing of their
expedition. S79MX, the VQ9's, TO5R and others have had excellent results
from the same area, but they were QRV between October and March which is the
optimum time for the Northern Hemisphere to work the Indian Ocean. It is a
shame that 3B7RF could not have planned the expedition for a more "low-band
friendly" time of year. In my opinion, the very best time of year for an
expedition to the Indian Ocean area is the winter side of either Equinox,
i.e. early October or early March. Conditions on all bands (160 through 10)
are optimum at this time.
In the meantime, we will have to make the best of the situation as it is,
which is a part of our challenge of DXing on Topband. Their signal on 80
was S9 here from 01-02 last evening so maybe they will try 160 again soon.
