I can't resist adding to this thread. I was in contact with Larry earlier about my experiences with skew from a location too close to the auroral zone. I have observed that when absorption is high what little signal there is comes from straight up - best on a low dipole and no directivity on any one of 12 beverages. Larry had observed that he couldn't discriminate against high noise levels in AZ using any directional antenna.
