The answer to the AM radio reception phenomenon in the NYC tunnels isnt exotic
- they run leaky transmission line the lenght of the tunnels attached to a low
power transponder which rebroadcasts the BC sigs into the tunnels so motorists
can hear traffic and safety info. They will be doing FM at some time and
already have cellular coverage down there the same basic way.
When you cant hear anything its because of a system malfunction or
maintenance.
Some people driving in these tunnels after hours on the weekends have reported
sightings of the Aurora Borealis down there, however, on occassion.
