Hi Roger,

It's all about noise on both ends of the QSO. Most of us have been increasingly deaf over the past 20 years, with the explosion of noisy electronics. The typical home in most of NA has several dozen noise sources; We hear them, and those in the homes of our neighbors.

I've lived in a dense redwood forest since moving from Chicago in 2006. I have very noisy neighbors in the direction of EU and the east coast of NA, in the direction of South America, and in the direction of Asia. From my QTH 70 miles S of San Francisco, I worked 7 zones in three countries on 160M; KH6, VE, US. It was all I could hear.
